Sister Simone Campbell
NETWORK Executive Director
Sister Simone Campbell is the Executive Director of NETWORK – a national group of social justice advocates inspired by Catholic Sisters that lobbies in D.C. to mend the gaps in income and wealth in the U.S. She has led five cross-country “Nuns on the Bus” trips, focused on economic justice, comprehensive immigration reform, voter turnout, bridging divides in politics and society, and (most recently) mending the gaps. She wrote the famous “Nuns’ Letter,” considered by many as critically important in convincing Congress to support the Affordable Care Act, and is the author of “A Nun on the Bus: How All of Us Can Create Hope, Change, and Community,” published by HarperCollins. She has received numerous awards, spoke at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, and has appeared on 60 Minutes, The Colbert Report, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. She is a religious leader, attorney and poet with extensive experience in public policy and advocacy for systemic change.
Music and spoken word performance by Ypsilanti duo Aint Afraid
From Baltimore Maryland to Michigan Raised, Singing and Spoken word duo Aint Afraid engage their talents given by god to advocate and spread peace, education and awareness. With a direct focus on Muslim and Minority Youth.
Encouraged by their mother and their experiences with homelessness, welfare, and poverty; the two have dedicated their time as youth activist to a plethora of youth groups. some of which are the NAACP youth volunteer leaders, Youth Leadership Council, Ypsilanti Mayors youth Council, and the University of Michigan’s Teen Advisory Council.
Their continuous work within their community has named them 2017-2018 young citizens of the Year. As a collective they were awarded “Dynamic gifted and talented women of Ypsilanti”, “Young Visionaries”, and “Honored Change Agents”.
They attribute their awards, honors, and accomplishments to God. As well as to their mother.
Aint Afraid has been described as “ A die hard metaphor for what our people need to do.” In the sense that we are all reflections of one another, just as they are to each other.
